I love your beautiful swimming pool! You have some nice elements now and with a few changes, your yard will be stunning.

Pave the concrete around the pool with a neutral, warm colored paver. Use paver edging to keep the pavers/stone in place. Remove the grass from the flower beds, add organic fertilizer and top with a 2” layer of pebble mulch to conserve water.

The unfinished corner (above) is a good location for a BBQ area. Move the palm tree and shrub to another area where they have plenty of room (possibly by the blue fence). Pave the area with bricks and mortar, aim for a flat, even surface. Place the BBQ, a small table and some chairs here.

Install a pergola over the new BBQ area and along the entire length of the street side wall including the opposite seating area. This gives you shade and a secluded place to sit. Create small flower beds and grow climbing plants up the pergola, avoid anything with thorns. Install garden edging around the beds, helpful because it keeps soil and mulch in place. Consult your local garden center for ideas about what to plant, bringing your photo would be helpful.

You have a lot of cream-colored wall space. There’s a couple of options to make it more attractive. Put trellis on the wall and grow climbing plants, add wall sculptures, a tiled design or paint the walls different colors (go for fresh, clear, beach colors, nothing too dark)

Finally, conceal the pump equipment behind removable wood panels, add attractive light fixtures and large pots of flowering plants.

Are you looking to add a pond to your landscaping this summer? Here’s nine things you need to know and do!

Just like most projects, you should start by planning. Check to be sure that the soil is stable enough to support a pond. Make certain that plants won’t be able to cut a hole in the liner. If you’re planning on having fish in the pond, you should choose a site with a good amount of sunlight.

Determine the depth. When you decide on what plants or animals will be in the pond, it will make it easy to determine its depth. It is important to make sure there is enough depth to allow the fish to hibernate during the winter.

Try a kit. The best way for beginners to install a pond is to buy a pond kit. It will come with all the necessary components needed to start the pond.

Chose a liner. The best to use is butyl rubber. This is a thicker liner which is better. Use carpet padding, which is think and contours nicely underneath the liner to protect against pebbles.

Add a waterfall! Water needs to be oxygenated. Adding a waterfall or fountain will help circulate the water and keep it oxygenated. By keeping the water circulating, you can keep algae at bay and prevent mosquitoes from breeding. Fish require the water to be oxygenated if they are living in the pond.

Chose an edging. You’ll need to give the pond a proper edge to make it look as if it’s always been a part of your yard. Try using an aluminum landscape edging like this one, and use natural rocks and plants to hide the edge of the liner.

Make a commitment to maintenance. Ponds are not maintenance free. A small pond is actually a lot more difficult to take care of than a larger one. The more water you have in the system, the more nature is able to take over and regulate. Fish need to be fed daily and pump filters need to be changed or cleaned.

Winterize the pond. You’re not going to want to drain the pond because the rubber liner will dry out and crack. As long as the water stays moving, it most likely won’t freeze solid. Fish can swim below the ice and remain there until spring.

Build a curb. You’ll need to build a curb around the pond so the rain water won’t cause it to overflow. If you don’t and you get a heavy rain, the fish might end up on the lawn. Make sure the curb is at least two inches taller than the pond to force the water around.

We know that outdoor living is high right now, and why wouldn’t it? We finally have the beautiful weather that we can enjoy. A lot of people tend to get creative when the warm weather starts to show itself. This means people are looking to fix up their gardens and maybe add a pool to their yard or just simply add a water feature. Water feature you say? What kind of water feature. We’re here to give you some ideas on how to use water in your landscaping.

Water Fountains

There are a lot of water fountains to choose from. There are some that are going to be more elegant, and some that are going to be simplistic. You will want to choose the right one for your space. You will want it to compliment your space. Picking out the right water fountain may be difficult, because you don’t want it to overpower your space. But it will be so worth it when it is done.

Bird Baths

Bird baths are a great thing to add to a garden. You will most likely get a nice view of the birds from having a birdbath as well. Wouldn’t that be nice? There are many types of bird baths. You can just get a regular bird bath made from stone. Or you could get a misting bird bath or even a heated bird bath that you can use during the winter months too. How cool is that?!

Ponds

One of the first things you’re going to want to decide is where you want to have your pond located. This will determine the size that you are going to want to choose. You will want to keep in mind that ponds should have the perfect amount of sun to shade ratio. The rule of thumb is that ponds should have about 4 to 6 hours of sun light to keep the water clean. Do some homework to find out what plants will do their best in ponds, plant them and voila! You’ve got a beautiful space that you can enjoy this time of year.

Rock Gardens

Rock gardens use lots of different sizes, colors and shape of rocks to accent a space. A lot of people like rock gardens because the sound of the water running over the rocks is soothing and nice to listen to. You can also plant plants in your rock garden. Just make sure the plants are able to grow on rough terrain.

Waterfalls

Waterfalls come in all shapes and sizes, so there are a lot of options when it comes to choosing one that will fit your space perfectly. There are two main types of ponds to choose from. One is waterfalls with a pond beneath it and the second is without a pond. Usually people only put waterfalls in if they have a pond. But it is possible to have a waterfall without one as well. With a pondless waterfall, water falls down a stone wall or rocks.

March weather is unpredictable at times but it’s not too early to get back into the garden! Early spring is the perfect time to lay the groundwork for the warm months. Here’s seven things you can do to wake up your garden in spring!

Clean Up Nonwoody Perennials

Some of your cold-hardy perennials (such as heurcheras and irises) may not go completely dormant during the winter and grip onto their leaves even during the winter storms. Changes are that they’re looking pretty disheveled at this point. Use your pruners to remove your brown or tattered leaves.

Prune Woody Perennials and Roses

Next up is the roses and shrubs. They’re probably just beginning to leaf or bloom (whichever comes first, depending on the plant), it’s easy to spot dead branches or rose canes. Be sure to prune by cutting on an angle just above the base of the branch or cane.

Get a Jump Start on Weeding

Most annual weeds won’t germinate until late spring. Many perennials such as dandelion, start leafing out very early! Dig deep and remove the entire root of any wild perennials that you don’t want in your garden.

Prepare Soil

Add generous amounts of compost to garden beds and borders, working it into the top few inches of the spoil. Spread an inch or two of compost around perennials making sure not to let the compost actually touch the plant. If your soils is acidic, add garden line to neutralize the pH. If you have heavy clay soil with poor drainage, try adding sand, pumice and/or compost!

Plant Cold-Hardy Blooming Annuals

The temperatures in spring can be very unpredictable, but annuals like pansies and primroses can handle the chilly weather. These will give your garden an instant color boost!

Get Containers Ready

Did you clean your empty plant containers at the end of the season last year? If not, do that now. It’s important to clean them fully to prevent plant disease and infestation problems later on. Scrub non-clay pots with soapy water. If you had pests last year, soak the containers with a mixture of one part bleach to nine parts water for ten minutes. Scrub clay pots with steel wool to remove mineral deposits.

Plan Ahead

We’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again. Spend time mapping out where you want to place your plants and any other new additions later on!

Go Vertical

Make gardens look larger than they actually are by adding trellis or arbor. These structures help draw the eye upward, creating the illusion of more space.

Grow Some Privacy

Keep privacy in mind as you design your small landscape. No one wants the neighbors looking over their shoulder as they relax outdoors. A fence or a screen to shield the view is essential; but don’t leave it at that! Grow something over the structure to add color and dimension.

Start from the Ground Up

Add some style to the small spaces by mixing complementary paving materials together. Besides adding color and style, the stones also create a sense of space that wouldn’t be possible if it was just a solid stone patio.

Divide and Conquer

The trick to gardening in a small yard is breaking up the available space into a series of mini beds rather than trying to squeeze in one large border. Brick pathways can be used to create a series of litter perennial borders around each of the brick pillars. Smaller beds allow easier access for weeding and planting.

Make It Cozy

Creating escape nooks for reading and resting are a good small backyard idea for dividing up the space and creating specific zones.

Add Color

The bolder the better when it comes to landscapes. A once-drab wall can be made much more impressive simply by being painted an eye-popping colour.

Keep Plants Vertical, Not Horizontal

Horizontal space is valuable in many small backyards. This is why it’s good to look for greenery that max out interest as they grow up, not out.

Conquer Dead Landscape Nooks

It’s easy to ignore the areas that don’t get a lot of immediate or street side view. Turn these spots into unexpected focal points. Try using a centerpiece tree, an oversize container, and flowers and foliage plants for interest.

Use the Power of Perspective

Long, straight lines trick you into thinking that your small yard or garden landscape is bigger than it is. Take full advantage of this illusion by adding a subtle slant the far ends of the lines toward one another and create another focal point.

Just Add Water

The smallest landscape can be improved by the mellow sound of trickling water. If you don’t have enough space for a water garden, try adding a fountain (or two) in the key locations of the yard.

Select Seating

Keep comfort in mind when choosing seating for your backyard. No one likes sitting on a teetering metal chair… no matter how pretty your landscaping is. Look for furniture with deep seating and wide arms that invite guests to sit and chat a while.

The post 11 Landscape Tips for Small Space Landscaping appeared first on Landscape Edging Blog.
