Clean Up Nonwoody Perennials

Some of your cold-hardy perennials (such as heurcheras and irises) may not go completely dormant during the winter and grip onto their leaves even during the winter storms. Changes are that they’re looking pretty disheveled at this point. Use your pruners to remove your brown or tattered leaves.

Prune Woody Perennials and Roses

Next up is the roses and shrubs. They’re probably just beginning to leaf or bloom (whichever comes first, depending on the plant), it’s easy to spot dead branches or rose canes. Be sure to prune by cutting on an angle just above the base of the branch or cane.

Get a Jump Start on Weeding

Most annual weeds won’t germinate until late spring. Many perennials such as dandelion, start leafing out very early! Dig deep and remove the entire root of any wild perennials that you don’t want in your garden.

Prepare Soil

Add generous amounts of compost to garden beds and borders, working it into the top few inches of the spoil. Spread an inch or two of compost around perennials making sure not to let the compost actually touch the plant. If your soils is acidic, add garden line to neutralize the pH. If you have heavy clay soil with poor drainage, try adding sand, pumice and/or compost!

Plant Cold-Hardy Blooming Annuals

The temperatures in spring can be very unpredictable, but annuals like pansies and primroses can handle the chilly weather. These will give your garden an instant color boost!

Get Containers Ready

Did you clean your empty plant containers at the end of the season last year? If not, do that now. It’s important to clean them fully to prevent plant disease and infestation problems later on. Scrub non-clay pots with soapy water. If you had pests last year, soak the containers with a mixture of one part bleach to nine parts water for ten minutes. Scrub clay pots with steel wool to remove mineral deposits.

Plan Ahead

We’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again. Spend time mapping out where you want to place your plants and any other new additions later on!

Make gardens look larger than they actually are by adding trellis or arbor. These structures help draw the eye upward, creating the illusion of more space.

Grow Some Privacy

Keep privacy in mind as you design your small landscape. No one wants the neighbors looking over their shoulder as they relax outdoors. A fence or a screen to shield the view is essential; but don’t leave it at that! Grow something over the structure to add color and dimension.

Start from the Ground Up

Add some style to the small spaces by mixing complementary paving materials together. Besides adding color and style, the stones also create a sense of space that wouldn’t be possible if it was just a solid stone patio.

Divide and Conquer

The trick to gardening in a small yard is breaking up the available space into a series of mini beds rather than trying to squeeze in one large border. • Add a decorative boulder (or five)

As you know, rocks have been used quite a bit in landscaping over the years. Sometimes they were placed there; sometimes they have been in a certain spot for years thanks to nature. Adding some boulders or large rocks to a space can make a huge difference.  You can also use boulders to hide things you don’t want seen. Things like electrical panels and air conditioners. Plant some flowers to complete the look of those boulders and rocks in your garden.

• Plant a new tree

Depending on where you live in the country, if you live in the colder areas then you know the toll that winter can take on some trees. So why not take out the old, not-so-good-looking tree and plant a new, fresh one in its place. Your yard and your neighbours will thank you. Plus, I’m sure you’ll see the benefits of it too when you see how great it looks!

• Consider a pathway

Do you ever think that your backyard needs something else, but you’re just not sure what it is? Try adding a pathway. Consider the space that you walk through the most and put it there. Maybe it’s the direction to the shed, or to the pool. Either way, your grass would like the change or being trampled on. • Clean up with river rock

Sticks and dried up leaves can be quite annoying when all you want is a clean looking lawn. Try installing river rock to give it a clean look.

• Refresh your lawn

Instead of looking at everyone else’s green lawn, hire someone to come and give you that lush green lawn that you have been wanting for a while. Or if you can, do it on your own. Plant some grass seed, pull out a sprinkler to keep it growing, and wait! It won’t happen overnight, but continual planting of grass seed and watering will keep it going.

• Cover the garden beds that will be used for vegetables with black plastic to kill weeds and warm the soil for the weeks leading up to the time of planting. This method is also needed when you are also using the no-till method.
• Sow more rows of lettuce, carrots and beets. Here’s a hint – sow smaller amounts every month to spread out the supply overtime rather than all at once.
• Plant a set of cabbage seedlings to mature after your March and April plants mature for a steady harvest.
• Plant your Brussels sprouts, kale and tomatoes at the beginning of the month and wait until the end to plant the pepper plants. Plant the seeds of warm weather vegetables now – that’s your beans, melons, cucumbers, squash and pumpkins. Your Corn should be planted at the end of the month or left to the beginning of June.
• Control your insect problem by hand-picking and covering your row covers or by using less harmful insecticides.
• Don’t forget to plant your herb seedlings!

For your Flower Beds:

• Do not forget to continue laying down newspaper and mulching your garden beds as you clear them of weeds. This task must be done every month!
• Plant your tender plants like geraniums, fuchsias, begonias and impatiens. Plant your dahlias and gladiolus tubers mid-month.
• Prune the shrubs that need it after bloom.
• Fertilize your roses and flowering shrubs that need it! If you compost, you should have enough for most flowering plants, but a few like hydrangeas and rhododendrons may benefit from additional feeding.

Other Tasks:

• You can still plant a new lawn this month, but after this you should wait for fall. For those with existing lawns, mow, mow and mow!
• Spot weed lawns and fertilize early if you didn’t do it in April.
• Lightly sheer evergreens and hedges to your preferred shape.
• Test your watering systems. Replace any hoses and sprinklers that need it.
• If you started your seeds indoors such as peppers, tomatoes, basil and other warm weather crops, you’ll need to harden-off gradually over a period of a week to allow the plants more and more hours outside until they are able to stay out overnight.
