Go Vertical

Make gardens look larger than they actually are by adding trellis or arbor. These structures help draw the eye upward, creating the illusion of more space.

Grow Some Privacy

Keep privacy in mind as you design your small landscape. No one wants the neighbors looking over their shoulder as they relax outdoors. A fence or a screen to shield the view is essential; but don’t leave it at that! Grow something over the structure to add color and dimension.

Start from the Ground Up

Add some style to the small spaces by mixing complementary paving materials together. Besides adding color and style, the stones also create a sense of space that wouldn’t be possible if it was just a solid stone patio.

Divide and Conquer

The trick to gardening in a small yard is breaking up the available space into a series of mini beds rather than trying to squeeze in one large border. Brick pathways can be used to create a series of litter perennial borders around each of the brick pillars. Smaller beds allow easier access for weeding and planting.

Make It Cozy

Creating escape nooks for reading and resting are a good small backyard idea for dividing up the space and creating specific zones.

Add Color

The bolder the better when it comes to landscapes. A once-drab wall can be made much more impressive simply by being painted an eye-popping colour.

Keep Plants Vertical, Not Horizontal

Horizontal space is valuable in many small backyards. This is why it’s good to look for greenery that max out interest as they grow up, not out.

Conquer Dead Landscape Nooks

It’s easy to ignore the areas that don’t get a lot of immediate or street side view. Turn these spots into unexpected focal points. Try using a centerpiece tree, an oversize container, and flowers and foliage plants for interest.

Use the Power of Perspective

Long, straight lines trick you into thinking that your small yard or garden landscape is bigger than it is. Take full advantage of this illusion by adding a subtle slant the far ends of the lines toward one another and create another focal point.

Just Add Water

The smallest landscape can be improved by the mellow sound of trickling water. If you don’t have enough space for a water garden, try adding a fountain (or two) in the key locations of the yard.

Select Seating

Keep comfort in mind when choosing seating for your backyard. No one likes sitting on a teetering metal chair… no matter how pretty your landscaping is. Look for furniture with deep seating and wide arms that invite guests to sit and chat a while.

The post 11 Landscape Tips for Small Space Landscaping appeared first on Landscape Edging Blog.

When summer hits and it’s time to water the lawn; it is important to find the right sprinkler to do the job right. The sprinkler that you will want to have will save water, which makes it easier on your pocket book and the environment. Your lawn should get about one inch of water per week, in order to keep it growing well and to keep it healthy. There are three different types of sprinklers you can choose from. Keep in mind that where you live changes how much water you need for your lawn.

Oscillating Sprinkler- This is the most common type of sprinkler. It can water up to 4,000 square feet of space, in a rectangular pattern. The problem with this can be that water can build up and create puddles on your lawn. This is caused by the curving of the water when it comes out of the sprinkler. You will need an oscillating sprinkler that has at least 15 spray jets. The cheaper the sprinkler the more you’re going to get puddles. So try to spend a little more so it works like it is supposed to.

Stationary Sprinkler- This is the best sprinkler for smaller spaces. You can get this sprinkler in three different patterns; circular, rectangular and square. This is the kind of sprinkler that a lot of people use for their kids to jump through. There is a bonus to this stationary sprinkler. It is one of the cheapest ones on the market. Although there are positives to everything, there can be negatives. The negative with this sprinkler is it can clog up easily, and is usually made of plastic, so it can break quickly.

Pulsating Sprinkler- This type of sprinkler makes a circular pattern, and it can water up to 10,000 square feet of space, given there is enough water pressure. This is the best sprinkler for spaces that have an irregular shaped space. The water rarely makes puddles with this type of sprinkler. The down-fall to this sprinkler is it is a little bit louder than other sprinklers, and it doesn’t work as well if you have low water pressure.

These three water sprinklers all have different prices and they all have different jobs. If you pick the right kind of sprinkler for your lawn you can end up saving a lot of money on water. Too much water can be bad, for a number of reasons; it’s bad for the environment, your wallet and your lawn. If you take the time to find the right sprinkler for your lawn that your lawn will thank you. You will also be happy with it because you will have a nice, green, lush lawn.

Do you feel like you need to spruce up your yard this year? Not every yard needs a drastic change to make things look better. Sometimes all you need to do is change a few minor things to help things to go from “blah” to “ou!” Below we have listed five simple ways to make your yard looking great!

Add a decorative boulder (or five)

As you know, rocks have been used quite a bit in landscaping over the years. Sometimes they were placed there; sometimes they have been in a certain spot for years thanks to nature. Adding some boulders or large rocks to a space can make a huge difference. You can also use boulders to hide things you don’t want seen. Things like electrical panels and air conditioners. Plant some flowers to complete the look of those boulders and rocks in your garden.

Plant a new tree

Depending on where you live in the country, if you live in the colder areas then you know the toll that winter can take on some trees. So why not take out the old, not-so-good-looking tree and plant a new, fresh one in its place. Your yard and your neighbours will thank you. Plus, I’m sure you’ll see the benefits of it too when you see how great it looks!

Consider a pathway

Do you ever think that your backyard needs something else, but you’re just not sure what it is? Try adding a pathway. Consider the space that you walk through the most and put it there. Maybe it’s the direction to the shed, or to the pool. Either way, your grass would like the change or being trampled on. Consider getting your landscape edging from yardproduct.com to make even lines.

Clean up with river rock

Sticks and dried up leaves can be quite annoying when all you want is a clean looking lawn. Try installing river rock to give it a clean look.

Refresh your lawn

Instead of looking at everyone else’s green lawn, hire someone to come and give you that lush green lawn that you have been wanting for a while. Or if you can, do it on your own. Plant some grass seed, pull out a sprinkler to keep it growing, and wait! It won’t happen overnight, but continual planting of grass seed and watering will keep it going.

Your lawn is one of the first things people see when driving past your home. With a little bit of time and effort, you can have the lawn that really is greener on the other side! Here’s how you get started.

Lawn Care Maintenance:

This is a must summer, spring, winter and fall! The spring and summer months should be spent watering and fertilizing and the fall and winter months should be spent protecting it from cold, harsh weather.

Weeds and dead leaves should be removed from your lawn as soon as you spot them. Weeds not only look unattractive but they also cause your healthy grass to die. There are a variety of pesticides available at your local home improvement store. Be sure to use them on a regular basis to prevent weeds from growing on your lawn.

Your trees and shrubbery should be trimmed as required. Plant flowers that welcome people to your home and make sure you cut grass no lower than three inches to the ground. Cutting it shorter can damage the blades and the health of the grass!
If you’re unhappy with your current grass, it might not be a bad idea to purchase grass seed and replant. There are tons of varieties of grass available and planting these seeds will put you on the path to a gorgeous lush lawn!

Hire A Professional:

Hire one of the dozens of companies that offer professional lawn care services in your area. Professional lawn care specialists can take care of things that you cannot do on your own. Unsure of what that entails? Give them a call and ask them what they can do to help your lawn be as beautiful and healthy as possible.
Be sure to ask around before you pick a lawn care technician. It’s important to compare licensing, experience, and competitive pricing when picking a company. Lawn care doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg, and if you compare companies, you can find an affordable price to work with your budget.

Final Thoughts:

Landscape Edging has tons of benefits for your lawns, gardens and even your pools or playgrounds. Check out what products we offer and their benefits here.

It’s April and a lot of us just got another snow fall! Spring landscaping sets up your lawn for success in the summer and eventually once the snow melts, you can tackle your muddy yard yourself or with your local landscaping professional. Here’s 10 tips to ensure that the grass is NOT greener on the other side.

Spring Cleaning

Hopefully the leaves from the fall were raked last year. If not, grab the rake and get to work! A deep raking can also help remove any grass that may have died during the winter.

Inspect

Walk around your lawn and look for any bare spots or brown patches that might need your attention. Also, take time to inspect your landscaping equipment. Will your lawn mower start? Does the blade need sharpening? Is the sprinkler system working? Does your lawn have any winter salt damage from de-icers and salt?

Reseed

After winter, your lawn might have some bare spots. Grass and weeds compete for space, so it is important to fill the void with new grass to prevent the weeds from taking over during the summer.

Mow

Once the warm weather sets in and the average daily temperatures rise above degrees Fahrenheit, grass will start sprouting. The new growth will require mowing. Set your mower higher and make sure not to cut your lawn shorter than 2.5 inches or more than 1/3 of the length when you mow. Cutting it too low removes too much of the grass leaf. Longer grass blades have longer roots, adsorb more nutrients and prevent weeds from growing.

Edge

Edging your lawn adds a clean appearance that improves your curb appeal and the overall look of the lawn. Edging also prevents overgrowth onto sidewalks and flowerbeds as the lawn becomes more active in the late spring and early summer. For some great landscaping options, check out YardProduct.com.

Feed

Fertilizer is like giving your lawn and plants a multi-vitamin. It helps them grow greener and lush! Use a soil test to figure out the exact type of fertilizer to use.

Weed

Prevent the spreading of weeds by applying a pre-emergent herbicide, a preventative weed killer. If crabgrass is a problem in your area, consult your local landscaping professional on what can be done to prevent it.

Prune

Trim your shrubs and plants for optimal growth. Spring’s blooming shrubs need to be pruned after they bloom, not before!

Water

Watering scheduled vary by region and plant type, as well as Mother Nature and in some cases, local restrictions play a role in watering frequency. Regardless of all the factors, you never want to over water. Use a water gauge to be precise with your watering schedule.

Aerate

Consider aerating your lawn in the spring in cases of over compaction from traffic, thin turf from dying grass and excessive thatch from a poor watering/feeding schedule. Aerating relieves these issues and promotes healthy lawns.

Dogs totally love spending time outside and of course, digging in the garden is one of their favorite outdoor activities. But just like kids, dogs can be a bit harmful to both your interiors and landscape if you do not distract them from the plenty of mischiefs they might get into. That is why you should be well acquainted with some techniques that will help you dog-proof your garden and make it a more convenient place for your beloved pet.

Give them a hint where to go

Dogs really like patrolling the yard. Your hairy friend will be much happier knowing that the perimeter is safe and free of uninvited cats, squirrels and birds. Guide your pet where to walk by laying a path close to your garden’s fence. This will protect your garden beds and allow the dog some space to have fun and run freely at the same time. Incorporating a fence in your garden landscape will also help you keep your playful friend safe by limiting their chance to go in the street without being supervised.

Think about the surface

In case the “path” idea pleases you, you should consider picking materials that will be as much comfortable as possible for your dog to run onto. Pea gravel is a good idea for pathways which do not get too hot in summer and have no sharp edges to injure your dog’s paws. However, your dog will sometimes avoid the paths and instead will go between the flowers, so when it comes to choosing mulch for your garden, we suggest buying something which is friendly to dog paw pads like mini chips, for example.

Provide amenities

The more your dog runs around, the more it will enjoy a chill and shady place to relax afterwards. Arrange a comfy spot under some tree or a shed where your pet will be able to lie down for a while to recover their strength after the long and exhausting ball game or bird chasing. Place a water bowl and make sure that there is always fresh, cool water in it. You can also design an area where to play fetch games with your dog without thinking about the plants you may harm. Just leave some space free of any flowers or herbs and plant only grass there to create a playground that will be easy to maintain.

Pay enough attention to your pet

Marking territory is a thing your dog will surely do, but if you often skip the walk, you can expect much more than this. Whenever you see the dog marking, water the areas promptly to avoid the negative consequences for your plants. Your garden will suffer every time you forget to take your pet out for their walk or if you do not spend enough time together. When dogs get bored, they start digging holes in the ground, picking flowers, etc. Engage your pet’s attention by making them a part of your gardening work. Let the dog sit near you and watch you planting or trimming. The more often you play and do things together, the less time and desire your dog will have to run on their own and thus damage the fragile plants you have taken much care of.

Pets are parts of our families so they surely deserve to feel comfortable and protected in home. Stick to those guidelines to make your garden a bit more dog-friendly and provide your loved pet with another reason to adore you.

As June arrives, so does the warmer weather! This usually marks the end of the planting season, but it also marks the beginning of some pretty great clearance sales! Be sure to check out your local gardening stores. If you purchase new plants, be sure to add organic matter to your soil so they have a leg up after their late start, and will improve your ground over time as well!

Unless you experience unseasonably cold, moist conditions, your spring bulbs should begin to yellow and will pull out of the ground with no resistance. Add these leaves to your compost pile but make sure not to remove the leaves before they are ready or your bulbs will not perform next year.

If you haven’t already began mapping out your garden’s spring bulb display, now is the perfect time to start! By doing this you will know which bulbs you want to purchase this fall.

Watch for signs of pests and weeds in your garden. If you catch them early enough you can usually keep them from becoming an epidemic that ruins your yard. Here’s some things to look out for:

Watch your tomatoes for spotted leaves. If they develop leaves pull them off the plant and throw them in the trash. This will stop diseases from developing.

Check your azalea’s for black spots on the bottoms. Lacebugs can become a very big problem but you wont notice the damage until August or even September!

Watch out for standing water in your garden as they can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

As the temperatures grow, so will your grass! Avoid allowing it grow too long; it is best to cut less than one-third of the total length off at one time. If grubs were a problem last year then make sure you treat your lawn end of May or early June. Make sure to water your lawn deeply during dry spells. It is best to let the water soak into the soil rather than only watering enough to make the top of the ground moist.
