Lawn edging is a physical barrier between the lawn and another area such as flower bed, path or driveway. Lawn edging provides a neat lawn edge and prevents grass roots growing into flower beds or over pavers. It also keeps plants, soil and mulch in place. In addition, landscape edging helps define walkways so that people are discouraged from walking over flower beds.

In addition to providing a neat appearance, garden edging can be real time-saver. There is no need to manually cut the edge of the lawn with an ‘edger’ tool, a task that must to be repeated as the lawn grows throughout the season. Lawn edging reduces the need for weeding and stops soil and mulch washing out of the flower beds due to rain or snow.

There are many different styles of lawn edging so it’s easy to choose a style that suits your garden or yard.

Aluminum Lawn Edging

This edging is does not rot and is rust proof so it lasts a long time. Because it is flexible, it so can be used for curved or straight lines. Compared to wood or stone edging, aluminum edging is light weight. Stakes are built into the edging and are used to anchor the edging in the ground, so it is easier to place and maintain than other types of edging which require trenches to be dug during installation. The design of ‘Dreamscape Aluminum lawn edging’ is low-profile, simple and clean, so it suits mid century or modern style yards and gardens, but also blends in with traditional styles.

Stone Edging

Natural stone edging is expensive, heavy and time-consuming to install. A great alternative to natural stone is Dreamscape’s Decorative ‘Stone’ edging. It is made out of lightweight, durable vinyl that has the appearance of stone. It is a surface edging which means it sits on top of the soil, so there is no need to dig a trench. This edging comes in interlocking pieces which will fit any shape, curve or straight line. The edging can be used to anchor landscape fabric in place, for example in a kid’s playground where the landscape fabric will be covered in mulch. The natural appearance of stone edging makes it perfect for ‘natural’ landscapes and traditional styles.

Sta-Right Edging

This edging by Dreamscape is made from recycled plastic and is ‘L’ shaped, with a horizontal edge that is installed flat on the ground and a vertical edge that abuts the lawn. Because of this construction it is very versatile and can be used as lawn edging, edging for beds and as a paver restraint for walkways, patios and driveways, where it will keep pavers in place. The unobtrusive appearance of this edging blends enables it to fit in with any style of yard or garden.

With so many different landscape edging styles available, there are plenty of options to choose from. Things to consider are; ease of installation, durability, the appearance of your yard or garden, your budget and access to customer support/instructions. If the plastic edging is made from recycled plastic, that’s another plus. It’s well worth making the investment in lawn edging because it will increase your yards curb appeal and reduce the amount of time needed for garden maintenance.

Using Lawn Edging for Tree Rings

Lawn edging is used to create tree rings around the base of trees, usually when the tree is planted in a lawn or paved area. The edging is installed in a circle around the tree and the area between the edging and the tree trunk is covered with a layer of organic mulch. The lawn edging provides a nice neat, crisp edge which suits the style of many gardens, especially in urban areas.

Installing Lawn Edging around Newly-Planted Trees

Tree rings using lawn edging or other material are best added to trees when they are first planted. When planting a tree, remove grass and weeds and add fertilizer as needed. Make sure the tree is planted at the correct grade with the top of the root ball one or two inches above the surrounding grade. The roots will settle after planting and this prevents rain water pooling around the trunk. Do not stake the tree because when the tree is allowed to move with the winds, it develops stronger anchor roots. After planting the tree, install the lawn edging at the outer edge, or just beyond the edge of the root zone or drip line (the area below the tree branches). After installing the edging, add a layer of mulch no more than two inches deep inside the edging to the tree trunk, this will conserve moisture and nutrients and stop weeds geminating. If the mulch is thicker than two inches deep, it will prevent water from reaching the tree roots and the soil will become too dry. Take care that no mulch actually touches the tree trunk because this may enable insects or disease to attack the tree. There are several benefits to installing landscape edging as a tree ring. Not only does it look good, but tools such as weed-whackers, manual edgers and lawn mowers are not used close to the tree trunk where they can damage the bark, cut the roots, break branches or compact the soil. The lawn edging also stops lawn grass from invading the soil under the tree where it competes with the tree for nutrients and moisture.

Installing Lawn Edging around Mature Trees

It is possible to install lawn edging as a tree ring around a mature tree but this should be done with extreme care by an expert in the field such as a professional landscape gardener or arborist. Be sure to choose a professional who has previous experience and follow up on their references. This is because there are some risks to installing tree rings around mature trees. For example the roots or bark could be damaged or branches broken. In the worst case scenario, the tree could die and you could lose a valuable mature tree that is impossible to replace. The landscape professional will remove turf grass from underneath the tree in a circular shape, the edge of the circle may well extend beyond the edge of the root zone or the drip line (the area below the tree branches) so it could be a very large area, depending on the size of the tree. After the turf is removed, edging will be installed, followed by a layer of mulch.

Tree rings can improve the appearance of your yard or garden and also contribute to the long-term health of a tree. Be sure to follow the correct steps to prevent damage to the tree and hire an expert when working with mature trees or valuable specimen trees.

The STONE EDGE Decorative edging is a surface installed edging. That means no digging is needed! The edging system gives the appearance of a natural stone barrier and provides a beautiful means for neatly defining the boundaries between your lawn and mulch beds. This mechanism allows the components both to hold firmly together and to flex in any direction, giving you the freedom to fashion the edging system into an infinite number of shapes around your landscaping. Here’s how you install your own Stone Edge Landscape Edging!

Step One: Mark out where you want your edging to go!

Step Two: Lay down garden tarp to keep your stone (or mulch or topsoil, etc.) from disappearing into the ground below.

Step Three: Snap each piece of edging to the next piece.

Step Four: Lay all the pieces that you have snapped together in the garden area where you want the edging.

Step Five: Secure the edging to the ground by inserting the included spikes into the eyelet hole on the back of each STONE EDGE piece.

Step Six: Add the stone (or mulch, topsoil, etc.) inside the edging.

Step Seven: Add your playground equipment, plants, firepits, etc.

Step Eight: Enjoy your newly edged playground (or garden) and lawn!
